CAMPAIGNS

#UnmaskingGBV

YWLI is running an online campaign dubbed #UnmaskingGBV aimed at addressing the systematic silence surrounding violence against adolescent girls and women during COVID19. Kenya has reported a surge of cases of domestic violence, sexual abuse and femicide. YWLI is working closely with grassroots feminist led organizations, social movements, community health volunteers and community mobilisers to create awareness for support during this pandemic. The gaps in violence prevention and response that exist have been magnified as resources and access to services have become more strained.  YWLI is influencing this to ensure prevention and response mechanisms are set up including continued psychosocial support for victims/survivors and due diligence procedures are adhered to in the emergence of COVID19 pandemic

#MyDearBody

YWLI with support from The African Women’s Development and Communications Network (FEMNET), Oxfam International and The European Union (EU) under the Strengthening Women’s Networks Greater Impact (STITCH) project launched a six months campaign aimed at mobilising actions at different levels, challenging various patriarchal notions and public discourse that supports femicide or blames various forms of violence against women and girls on the victims/ survivors. The #MyDearBody campaign analyses policies that need reform, call for reformulation and implementation linking such concerns to various women’s rights policies and the prevention of violations such as those encompassed in sexual harassment policies. The campaign uses both online and offline tactics by using the YWLI network members and young feminists influencers, capitalizing on their social capital, connections and access to information required to build and maintain relations and networks across a diverse range of social issues. #MyDearBody campaign uses shot videos, feminist influencers’ quotes, memes, GIFs and action photos as a means of sharing knowledge to challenge misogynistic and patriarchal notions in our societies that place women and girls at risk of fully enjoying their rights, with over 25Million impressions and 10, 000 within a 6-hour Twitter conversation.

#TaxJusticeKe

YWLI through the support of the Global Alliance for Tax Justice and WomanKind WorldWide has been organizing social media campaigns to mobilize young feminists and young feminist led organizations at the county and national levels in understanding the tax systems in Kenya. The campaign is aimed at mobilizing tax justice activists to influence policymakers at all levels to adopt reforms in tax policies to promote gender equality, strengthen the connection between the tax justice and gender justice movements in the fight for a progressive tax and economic system that works for all women and to raise awareness among the general public on tax justice as essential to fulfil women’s rights and achieve gender equality.

Through the campaign young feminists were able to discuss and understand the importance of participating in global policy processes from an informed perspective in order to fully voice out their issues and concerns. Through the campaign young feminists’ and allies’ capacities were strengthened through gaining an understanding of the issue that is rarely seen as an important advocacy area but contributes highly to the challenges girls and women face in their everyday lives. The campaign was able to reach over 500,000 people through Twitter, Instagram, TikTok and FaceBook.
