SEXUAL AND REPRODUCTIVE JUSTICE

ABOUT

YWLI emphasizes the justice component of sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) because it addresses the systemic injustices that have historically marginalized certain groups, such as women, girls, and LGBTQI individuals and denied them access to crucial services and information. We believe that women and girls, regardless of gender, age, socioeconomic status, geographical location, gender identity, and sexuality, have the right to make autonomous decisions about their own bodies and reproductive functions.

Current activities

Girls’ Led Sessions

Over the years we have created spaces for adolescent girls to take up space by providing them with opportunities to lead and express themselves. Their comprehensive training programs cover essential aspects of development, such as sexual reproductive justice, self-awareness, and menstrual health. YWLI goes beyond these topics, exploring leadership skills, mental health awareness, financial literacy, career development, and digital literacy. Through education on gender equality, health, nutrition, critical thinking, and civic engagement, YWLI ensures a well-rounded approach to empowerment. The initiative emphasizes creating an inclusive environment where girls can confidently express themselves. YWLI’s multifaceted efforts aim not only to shape future leaders but also to nurture individuals who are prepared to make positive contributions to society.

Grassroots movement building on SRHR issues

YWLI mobilises adolescent girls and young women at the grassroots and national level to build a strong movement of active youth champions on SRHR. We continue to define the AGYW agenda as an important part of the health and women’s rights agenda.

Policy Advocacy

YWLI offers opportunities for participation in policy processes and advocacy capacity development to ensure AGYWs are at the forefront in ensuring policies are responsive to their needs. Through policy engagements,  YWLI has championed the implementation of the Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health (ASRH) Policy. Our next phase of this work is in review of the policy with a view to include various aspects of SHR that have been omitted in the policy.
